This is the moment where all (well those with debranded handsets anyway) N95-1 users can dance a little jig of joy; Nokia have released a new firmware update to the handset and it’s an absolute corker!

I’m sure you lot want to know some of the juicy details so lets jump straight in.
First off the mark, and the one you’ve all been crying out for, demand paging. The N95-1 had a serious lack of RAM, and suffered for it. We would often be plagued with the dreaded ‘Out of Memory’ messages. At times, it even made browsing on some sites impossible. Well demand paging rectifies this. While it’s not an actual RAM upgrade it basically has a similiar effect. While we are not up to the slightly obscene amounts of RAM free on some recent Nokia models (about 90mb free on the N82 and N95 8gb) there’s a definate and much needed jump up. After a boot now you’ll be looking at around 30mb of free RAM. With the previous firmwares, you’d be looking at about 16-18mb free. The screenshot below is off Handy Taskman, taken straight after a boot.

Much better! Of course, the increase in free RAM means you can multitask better, which means you can do things like this…

OK, so realistically you’ll never need all that running, but it’s nice to know you can!
Nokia have included the Ngage preview software in this update too. It’s the same as seen on the N95 8gb and N82 (possibly others also, but I can only comment on those). It’s prominantly located when you access the menu. The preview includes the same games as on the others, Fifa 07 and Asphalt Rules. Check the screeny to see.

The search function from the new Nseries models has been included with v20.0.015 andI still think it’s as great as ever. instead of giving you the lowdown again, check my post on the N95 8gb here to see a video of how it works.
The camera now loads much quicker, as does the process of actually taking a picture. I’m not going to lie, it’s not as fast as the 8gb model and nowhere near as fast as the N82, but it’s a damn sight better than it was before. Maybe now you’ll be able to get that picture before the moment passes?
There’s a link now to the music store, but it unfortunately it doesn’t support this model yet. For those who haven’t used the music store yet, check this post from Ricky at Symbian-Guru to see a great walkthrough. I’m sure Nokia will get this working soon.
There’s a couple of new things, such as an updated Welcome Menu, but realistically you probably won’t be using it so I’m nto going to go into it.
So there you have it, a lowdown on the new N95 firmware. The new version is currently available for all unbranded handsets so you chaps with network branded models are going to have to wait. Again.
Why don’t you head over to the to chat about your experiences with this new firmware?

No Update for my N95 (unbrande, running 12.0.013, in germany) neither the nokia software updater nor the website does tell me about a new version. Does it have to be localised first?

I meant that tool when I wrote “website” above - that probably means I will have to wait some more. Maybe the Nokia Software Update Feed (http://tinyurl.com/2×6k8y)will tell me when the new Firmware finally is up for grabs.
