Time to reveal all!
Back on April 16th 2007, Nokia released an application called Sports Tracker. Sports Tracker is a GPS based activity tracker that runs on Nokia smartphones. Information such as your speed, distance and time are automatically stored to your training diary. Basically, it monitors your workouts and you can see how you progress over time. very handy for those of us who like a jog. Which isn’t me at all.
They’ve recently updated the application with a web based service that you can find at http://sportstracker.nokia.com/. With the web site you can upload your workouts and it displays them on a map. You can keep this data private, or let the whole world see how good (or awfully bad) you are doing. Read on to find out how all this relates to me…
Those you know me will tell you I’m quite obviously not a fitness junkie, my slightly rotund shape makes this painfully apparant, as does my fondness for a pint or two and a packet of fags. I’m not fat, but there’s a hell of a lot of work that could be done. Also I’ve not done any real exercise for about 4 years so I’ve got to start thinking about my heart seen as I’m getting old. Well I’ll be 25 soon, so not exactly old but you get the point.
Geek Fitness is me, hopefully showing the world the potential of having this kind of functionality on your phone. For the foreseeable future, every single day I’ll be going for a run, and I’ll be uploading a link through to the new workout for all the world to see. You’ll be able to see how far I’ve run, my speed, the length of time I was running for, the fastest and slowest points of my run and even the exact path my run has taken me on. Every day I’ll be trying to increase the length on my run, and on the last day of the week I’ll be trying to beat the time of the first run of that week, time trial style.
The embarassing part of this is that as I’m doing this to lose weight, I’ll be posting up my weight every week. With any luck we’ll see my slowly but surely dropping a few pounds. If not, then obviously the scales are wrong…
After every job I will post a video of the state I’m in, so expect to see me A) comatose and drooling or B) crying.
Of course, feedback from you guys is important too, so here’s what I want from you. Make sure I’m doing it. Give me some feedback, recomendations, anything. If I ever miss a day, pull me up about it! If anyone catches me having not done a workout, I promise I will do twice the milage I had done before. It’s not easy to start exercising alone, soyou guys are going to be the ones driving me on.
Please bear in mind, I’ve done no exercise for years, so it’s going to be rather short runs at first. This will grow over time, so please, no sarcastic comments at this stage. Save them till later if I fail miserably.
I look forward to hearing your feedback. Get ready for the first run tomorrow. Also keep tuned to the blog, as there is another project coming soon, this one with a totally different focus.
